چکیده

501 VOLUME 46__JUNE 17, 2009 Diarrheal disease continues to be a significant burden in terms of childhood morbidity and mortality despite tremendous progress in many fields. The 2007 Indian Academy of Pediatrics guidelines on management of acute diarrhea(1) emphasized three points: (i) low-osmolarity oral rehydration solution (ORS) is the universal rehydration solution for all ages and types of diarrhea; (ii) oral zinc therapy is recommended in all types of diarrhea; and (iii) probiotics and antisecretory agents are not recommended based on current knowledge. These guidelines are in line with preceding WHO recommendations(2) and based on robust evidence. Feasibility of implementation in routine practice makes it the cornerstone of management in our country.

Honey in the treatment of infantile gastroenteritis.

A clinical study was undertaken using honey in oral rehydration solution in infants and children with gastroenteritis. The aim was to evaluate the influence of honey on the duration of acute diarrhoea and its value as a glucose substitute in oral rehydration. The results showed that honey shortens the duration of bacterial diarrhoea, does not prolong the duration of non-bacterial diarrhoea, and...

Does an L-glutamine-containing, Glucose-free, Oral Rehydration Solution Reduce Stool Output and Time to Rehydrate in Children with Acute Diarrhoea? A Double-blind Randomized Clinical Trial

This study assessed whether an oral rehydration solution (ORS) in which glucose is replaced by L-glutamine (L-glutamine ORS) is more effective than the standard glucose-based rehydration solution recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO-ORS) in reducing the stool volume and time to rehydrate in acute diarrhoea. In a double-blind, randomized controlled trial in a Mexican hospital, 147 d...

Rice-based oral rehydration solution for treating diarrhoea.

BACKGROUND Oral rehydration therapy is used to treat dehydration caused by diarrhoea. However the rehydration solution does not reduce stool loss or length of illness. A solution able to do this may lessen the use of ineffective diarrhoea treatments as well as improve morbidity and mortality related to diarrhoea. OBJECTIVES The objective of this review was to assess the effects of rice-based ...

Recent Developments in Oral Replacement of Fluid and Electrolyte Losses

Oral rehydration therapy (ORT), using a solution of glucose and three salts (ORS) is an elegant and deceptively simple therapeutic technology, to treat or prevent dehydration from diarrhea, that stood the test of time over the past 25 years of use. It contributed substantially to the dramatic global reduction in mortality from diarrheal diseases during this period (1). However, its use does not...
